PENANG has been proactive in championing green initiatives and environmentally friendly practices, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.
Describing Penang as the forefront of promoting environmental practices, Chow lauded the initiatives of the Penang Green Agenda 2030, Penang Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Taskforce (PREET) and Penang Waste Segregation at Source Policy as clear examples of creating a sustainable and eco-friendly environment.
“The collaboration between the Penang Green Council (PGC) and Let’s Do It World, a global environmental organisation, on this World Cleanup Day is a testament to promoting a clean environment.
“My deepest appreciation and admiration for the extraordinary effort and dedication shown by everyone here in cleaning up a few places in Penang this morning.
“We witnessed a remarkable display of unity and determination. The volunteers from all walks of life, students, professionals and local communities have cleaned up five places in the state.
“They have successfully gathered 374.3kg of waste, consisting of general waste and recyclables.
“This embodied the power of collective action towards a common goal,” said Chow, who is also PGC chairman, during the closing ceremony of Penang World Cleanup Day 2023 in Komtar today.
Chow said the cleanup was important to raising awareness of waste management.
PGC general manager Josephine Tan thanked those who joined the noble effort in cleaning up.
“They have successfully cultivated the importance of preserving the environment,” she said.
Among those present during the closing ceremony were state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, and MBPP councillor Tan Soo Siang.
