THE much-anticipated Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta 2024 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of sportsmanship, culture, and international unity.

This year’s event, scheduled for Nov 23 and 24, marks a major milestone in Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, commemorating 50 years of strong ties.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the event would be further enriched through key partnerships with the Consulate General Office of China in Penang and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO).

“In an exciting addition to the event, Nov 22 will see the inaugural flight of HK Express from Hong Kong to Penang.

“Over 100 paddlers from Hong Kong will arrive on this specially chartered flight to compete in the regatta, underscoring the growing bond between Penang and Hong Kong.

“This partnership not only strengthens travel and cultural exchanges but symbolises a new chapter in collaboration and connectivity,” he told a media conference in Komtar today.

The regatta will bring together over 1,600 participants from 61 teams representing 12 countries and regions, including China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Chinese Taipei, and Malaysia.

Wong said the diverse mix of international teams would create a global spectacle at Penang’s scenic Straits Quay Retail Marina, which will serve as this year’s venue.

“This venue change from Teluk Bahang Dam offers improved accessibility and stunning views, enhancing the experience for both participants and spectators.

“Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Berhad, as the venue sponsor, has been instrumental in bringing the regatta closer to the public, offering vibrant viewing areas and a lively atmosphere,” he added.

Wong also listed the four challenge trophies of the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta 2024, namely, the TYT Challenge Trophy (Malaysia Premier Open) (400m); Malaysia-China Friendship Challenge Trophy (International Premier Open) (400m); Hong Kong Challenge Trophy (International Premier Mixed) (400m); and Hong Kong Junior Challenge Trophy (International Junior U24 Open) (400m).

In addition, he highlighted that the Penang Dragon Boat Regatta’s roots trace back to the 1950s when it was first held to honour the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival.

“Over the decades, it has evolved into an international sporting event, symbolising Penang’s cultural vibrancy and community spirit.

“Notable historical moments include the dragon boat races held in 1956 to commemorate George Town’s centennial and the first Penang International Dragon Boat Festival in 1979, which featured 66 teams from across Asia.

“This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta, a testament to its growth and impact as a global competition.

“The event continues to foster unity and celebrates Penang’s multicultural heritage,” he said.

Wong also honoured and acknowledged the dedication of sponsors and partners, including Seiko as the official timing sponsor, Angsana Teluk Bahang Penang as the official hotel, Emico as the medal sponsor, and Spin as the official apparel sponsor.

“Their support, alongside the efforts of the organising committee, ensures a memorable and well-coordinated event,” he said.

Among those present at the media conference were E&O Berhad senior general manager Datuk Zawawi Yusop, Spin Sportswear Malaysia managing director Wilson Lee, Emico Holdings Berhad managing director Francis Lim, Angsana Teluk Bahang Penang event sales manager Farris Malek, and 100Plus region trade marketing manager Darren Chee.
