THE Penang Stadium and Open Spaces Corporation (PSDKLPP) has been encouraged to explore the creation of more pickleball courts across the state to uncover new talents and introduce a fresh recreational activity within local communities.

Representing Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the Penang Chief Minister’s Cup Pickleball Tournament 2025 at Giant Bayan Baru today, his political secretary Lau Eng Kee said the initiative would support the growing interest in pickleball, a sport that has been gaining rapid popularity both locally and internationally.

“With the establishment of more pickleball courts, we hope to cultivate potential talents while offering an inclusive, enjoyable activity that strengthens social bonds within communities,” Lau told reporters.

He noted that pickleball, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is easy to learn, suitable for all ages, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. He expressed optimism that Penang could eventually position itself as a regional hub for the sport with the right support.

He also commended the strong participation in this year’s tournament, noting that the overwhelming response, particularly in the Novice Men’s Doubles category, prompted organisers to introduce an additional group to accommodate more players. He also lauded the encouraging number of female participants, describing it as a positive step towards greater inclusivity in the sport.

Lau added that the state government views such tournaments as opportunities not only to promote fitness but also to boost sports tourism, further enhancing Penang’s reputation as a destination for international community sporting events.

He expressed hope that the Penang Chief Minister’s Cup Pickleball Tournament would become an annual fixture, attracting participants from within and beyond Penang in the years to come.

Jointly organised by MPKK Jalan Transfer/Jalan Argyll, members of the Padang Kota Penang Youth Committee (JBPP) and Padang Kota Service Centre, the tournament featured eight categories for players across various age groups and skill levels.

Lau congratulated all the participants, encouraging those who did not win to continue improving, and thanking the organisers, sponsors, and volunteers for their dedication to making the event a success.

Also present at the closing ceremony were state Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol, Beh Teh from redONE Holdings Bhd, Group CSO and co-founder; Ewe Chee Way, director of the Padang Kota State Constituency and Batu Kawan Parliamentary Constituency Service Centre; Mak Tong Lee, chairman of the Jalan Transfer/Jalan Argyll Village Community Management Council (MPKK), Teh Wei Huai, chairman of the Padang Kota Penang Youth Committee; Koay Ee Teng, chairperson of the organising committee; and Gary Poh, the tournament coordinator.
