Penang firm creates stunning sculptures

DID you know that the magnificent sculpture artworks seen in the country’s popular theme parks such as in Genting Highlands, Sunway Lagoon, Lost World of Tambun and Legoland Malaysia were made by a Penang-based company?

Sculpture Environment Art Sdn Bhd (SEA), located in Bukit Mertajam, is not just proud to be involved with the aforementioned theme park projects but also in overseas projects such as Universal Studios Singapore, Lost Paradise of Dilmun (Bahrain), Pantai Cermin Theme Park (Indonesia), Legoland (Denmark), Sinbad’s Kids Club (Dubai) and many more.

Established in 1998, the company’s core business is producing high quality sculpture artworks in small-scale and large-scale projects. Their team of creative professionals are also known for making statues for commercial and residential spaces.

SEA managing and art director Yeoh Guan Eek said he started the business by producing small-scale sculpture works for popular comic characters from 1998 until 2003 before moving on to larger sculpture-building projects.

“I still remember we got our first large-scale project (at the end of 2003) involving sculpture works for the Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh, Perak.

“We were responsible for the concept design of the theme park before making the actual construction of the sculptures.

“It was very challenging at that time because that was our first large-scale project and our client’s expectation was high.

“But at the end, we managed to complete the project on time and perfectly as you can see now at the theme park. And it took us about one year to complete all the sculptures.

“And since then, we started to get many large-scale projects from our clients across the country and abroad,” said Yeoh during an interview with Buletin Mutiara at SEA office in Bukit Mertajam recently.

According to Yeoh, they also use a 3D sculpture machine for small-sized sculpture works to expedite the process.

“And for a large sculpture, we have our own talented sculptors to craft it manually.

“All of these sculptures will be produced here before being brought and installed at the project site.

“Currently, we have 50 employees, including sculptors, working at the company,” he added.

When asked about the company’s latest project, Yeoh said the company is in the process of completing sculpture works for the new outdoor theme park in Genting Highlands.

“We also have a few projects related to sculpture works in Penang.

“One of them is in the Sungai Pinang constituency, near to a seafront promenade at Karpal Singh Drive.

“It is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by our company.

“Once it is finished, we hope that it will become a tourist attraction in Penang,” he added.
