IN an exciting announcement earlier today, Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid unveiled the highly anticipated Arts in the Park 2023 festival, slated to captivate Penangites on Nov 4.
What sets this year’s event apart is its grand expansion into the heart of Penang’s George Town, taking place at the picturesque Penang City Park, George Town, from 3pm to 9pm.
Syerleena, who initiated this festival during her tenure as Seri Delima state assemblyman, is all set to celebrate diversity and ignite the flames of creativity and artistry among the vibrant community of Penang. But the most intriguing development for Arts in the Park 2023 lies in its significant growth and innovative additions.
This year, the festival welcomes an exciting collaboration with renowned partners, including Penang Hidden Gems, My Kreatif Penang, Tuanku Fauziah Museum and Art Gallery (MGTF-USM), Penang Art District, and Penang Walkabouts. However, what truly sets this festival apart is its expansion into the heart of Bukit Bendera parliamentary constituency, transcending its former Island Glades location.
Diving into the heart of the matter, this year’s Arts in the Park will introduce three major zones: the Amphitheatre, Field, and Park areas.
Syerleena said that each of these zones would be brimming with artistic wonders, offering visitors an array of experiences, from captivating visual arts and uplifting live music performances to enchanting dances and interactive workshops.
“One remarkable feature to look forward to is the ‘trishaw painting’ initiative, organised by Penang Walkabouts.
Penang Walkabout group administrator Robert Teh said: “The iconic trishaws will be transported from Armenian Street to the Youth Park, allowing individuals from all walks of life to channel their inner artists. Canvases and paint-on templates will be provided to the public.
“This event not only promises a creative outlet but also supports trishaw riders who were severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns.
USM’s Tuanku Fauziah Museum and Art Gallery representative Mohd Firdaus Khairuddin highlighted the ‘Kebun Bunyi’ workshop, where visitors could gain a hands-on experience with traditional Malaysian musical instruments.
Syerleena’s vision for Arts in the Park 2023 extends beyond a mere celebration of music and arts. It serves as a vibrant platform to unearth local talents and foster creativity and cultural exchanges among Penangites.
The best part? Entrance to the festival is free. However, some workshops may have nominal charges, which will depend on the respective artists.
Interested individuals can find more information on Syerleena’s social media accounts and those of the partnering entities.
Representatives from Penang Arts District, Penang Hidden Gems, and My Kreatif Penang were also present at the press conference.
