The Penang government has allocated RM860,000 to 15 mission schools across Penang this year, with funds distributed based on the schools’ needs and applications.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow presented the cheques to the schools’ representatives at Komtar today, underscoring the state government’s commitment to their safety and well-being.

“Out of the RM860,000 allocation, nearly half – amounting to RM420,000 – has been specifically approved for school infrastructure repairs and upgrades. These include repairing roofs, ceilings, and drains, rewiring outdated and hazardous electrical cables, and upgrading school canteens to ensure a safer and more comfortable learning environment for students and staff.

“Additionally, in line with technological advancements and 21st-century learning needs, RM235,000 has been allocated for the installation of smartboards and the development of MakerLabs in mission schools.

“After aiding the schools with infrastructure repairs for 15 years, we’ve decided to help the schools to purchase computers or set up MakerLab, which is crucial for fostering creativity and technical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

“The remaining funds are allocated for various purposes, including the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems to enhance school security, as well as upgrades to sports infrastructure,” Chow said in his speech.

Among those present were Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, state executive councillors H’ng Mooi Lye and Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, assemblymen Teh Lai Heng (Komtar), Joseph Ng (Air Itam), Goh Choon Aik (Bukit Tambun), Kumaran Krishnan (Bagan Dalam), Chee Yeeh Keen (Bagan Jermal) and Lee Boon Heng (Kebun Bunga).

Chow highlighted that the funds disbursed today are part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that every child in Penang has access to quality education, regardless of their background.

“This allocation to mission schools is a testament to the state government’s commitment to supporting education across all communities.

“Education is the key to individual and national development, and it is a long-term investment that benefits not only the individual but also society and the nation as a whole.

“The importance of education cannot be underestimated in today’s rapidly evolving world, as it serves as the foundation for the development of competent and skilled individuals. A well-rounded human capital should not only excel academically but also possess leadership qualities, critical and analytical thinking skills, an appreciation for diversity, and most importantly, strong moral values,” Chow said.

Chow expressed hope that with today’s allocation, mission schools will continue to strengthen the quality of education for Penang’s children, enabling them to maximise their academic achievements and talents for a brighter future for Malaysia.

The 15 mission schools are: SK Convent Bukit Mertajam, SK Convent 1 Butterworth, SK Convent Green Lane, SK Perempuan Methodist, SK St Mark Butterworth, SK St Xavier (Jalan La Salle), SK St Xavier Cawangan, SMK (L) Methodist, SMK (P) Methodist, SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam, SMK Convent Butterworth, SMK Convent Green Lane, SMK Methodist Nibong Tebal, SMK St Mark Butterworth, and SMK St Xavier (Lebuh Farquhar).
