Penang govt formulates State Safe Family Policy

THE Penang government has developed the State Safe Family Policy to address domestic violence in the state.

The policy was approved during the state executive council meeting on July 15.

Penang Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng said that cases of abuse have increased after the enforcement of the movement control order (MCO).

“There are still victims who do not come forward because they do not know where to seek help.

“The victims fear that they would be harmed and that nobody could protect them.

“This policy is formulated to address domestic violence by providing more avenues for victims to seek help.

“The Penang government will be able to provide a more systematic support system.

“The state acts as a force to eradicate violence at home. We call for cooperation from various parties to address this matter,” Chong Eng said during a press conference in Komtar today.

Chong Eng said an estimated sum of RM60,000 would be required to kick-start the policy.

“The cost, which is to be funded by the state, include trainings and workshops for officers, building extension and training materials.

“We will be using the premises and facilities that belong to state government,” she said.

She added that participants from government agencies, religious organisations and non-governmental organisations who have responded positively to the movement would be trained to provide immediate assistance to abused victims. They will also be equipped with skills to handle cases of domestic violence professionally.

“We welcome more participation from organisations, especially those who are willing to offer their premises as a temporary shelter for victims pending assistance from the authorities,” Chong Eng said.

Chong Eng thanked the Women Centre for Change (WCC) and Sneham Malaysia for their support and commitment.

Also present were Sneham Malaysia president Datuk Dr Florance Sinniah, WCC president Susan Siew Pui Fun and its executive director Loh Cheng Kooi.
