NON-governmental organisatons have heavily played a key role in transforming lives of the vulnerable amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
As a sign of appreciation, the Penang government on Dec 10 had contributed a sum of RM47,000 to 10 churches in the state to assist them in their proposed community programmes for the needy.
They are the Global Harvest Assembly (RM5,000), The Charismatic Church of Penang (RM5,000), Canaan Life Assembly (RM5,000), Georgetown Baptist Church (RM5,000), Prai Baptist Church (RM5,000), Faithful City Church (RM5,000), Bukit Mertajam Baptist Church (RM5,000), Kingdomcity Penang Hub (RM5,000), FGA Centre (RM5,000) and Sungai Ara Christian Centre (RM2,000).
All the churches were also given 200 boxes of face masks each.
State Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng said that churches in the state have equally earned the title of unsung heroes during this Covid climate due to their contribution and relentless effort to make a difference in the lives of the needy.
“Despite the Covid-19 pandemic and sufferings that the nation has gone through, we still have hope in us, and it is because of NGOs like all of you who have stepped in and helped those in need.
“With the rising number of domestic violence and suicidal cases since the beginning of the movement control order lockdown last year, now more than ever, we have to continue bringing hope to the community.
“Hope is a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel that carries someone through their tough times.
“Society has to be empowered to be able to extend help and be a listening ear for those in despair and in distress. Let them know that they are not alone and help is everywhere.
“Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, churches have not stopped in their social and community work.
“Tonight, we take the opportunity to acknowledge the relentless efforts and contributions of the unsung heroes in our community, the churches, who have done so much for the community here.
“The Penang government is glad to have the privilege to work with the 10 churches, in which a sum of RM47,000 will be contributed to them to assist in their proposed community programmes for the needy in our society,” Chong Eng said during the Season of Hope Christmas celebration at Penang Harmony Corporaton (Harmonico) in Scotland Road on Dec 10.
She also added that churches and other places of worship could play an important role in building the community.
“Churches and temples can be more than just a place of worship; it can also be a First Support Point to provide a safe point or community centre for those in need.
“This is what the state government is striving for and would like to promote for the community here in Penang,” she added.
