THE Penang government has committed to allocating RM60 million for aided primary and secondary schools in Penang over the next six years, until the year 2030.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced this during his attendance at the Old Xaverians’ Association (OXA) Centenary Dinner at the St Giles The Wembley Hotel today.
“The state government is aware of the financial challenges and will continue to assist in improving the physical conditions of our schools.
“The Penang government had pledged a total of RM60 million for aided primary and secondary schools until the year 2030, as mentioned in our election manifesto, and we will fulfill this promise,” he said.
He also commended the association for upholding the Xaverian spirit of friendship and cooperation, regardless of race and religion.
“I am overwhelmed by your association’s 100-year history since its inception in 1924, promoting the Xaverian spirit of friendship and cooperation irrespective of race and religion,” Chow expressed in his speech.
He highlighted the OXA’s role in promoting sports activities and fostering unity among former students and the community of Penang.
Chow also hoped that the OXA would continue to progress and become exemplary corporate citizens.
He acknowledged the OXA’s initiative in forming the Malaysia Federation of La Sallian Alumni Associations in 1976 as a significant step toward safeguarding the interests of the La Sallian education system.
Besides that, he praised the OXA’s support for education through the granting of education scholarships to junior members.
At the dinner, the OXA presented a total of RM54,000 to various charitable organisations and RM36,000 to St Xavier’s schools, namely St Xavier’s Institution, SK St Xavier’s branch school, and SK St Xavier’s.
OXA president Datuk Khoo Khay Seang presented a RM10,000 cheque to Chow as a contribution to the Penang Disaster Aid Fund.
