The Penang government acknowledges and values the significant contributions of clan associations to the state’s growth and cultural heritage.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised the pivotal role played by these associations, recognising the hard work and wisdom of Chinese ancestors who laid the foundation for cultural preservation, community services, and educational development.
Expressing pride in their fighting spirit, he pledged ongoing support for clan associations to enhance cultural heritage and boost local tourism.
“We are committed to extending our support to clan associations, aiming to bolster both cultural heritage preservation and the local tourism economy,” he said during the Fooi Chew Association 200th anniversary and fund raising gala dinner at Sunway Carnival Mall in Butterworth today.
The anniversary celebration, with a fundraising gala that collected approximately RM200,000, reflects the commitment to preserving historical landmarks.
The sum would be spent to restore the association’s building.
Chow commended the association’s achievements and emphasised Penang’s status as a renowned tourist destination, particularly among Chinese tourists, owing to its rich cultural heritage.
Fooi Chew Association chairman Datuk Lio Chee Yeong expressed gratitude for the state’s support, highlighting the association’s dedication to member welfare and community activities.
Looking ahead, they aim to safeguard their history and cultural heritage for the next 200 years.
