THE consultant for the Gurney Wharf project will be appointed within this month, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
“We will be able to sign the agreement to appoint the consultant at some point in February.
“And after that, there will be a contract, a tender to be called to appoint a contractor to start the project and thus ensuring that the waterfront project would be completed in the next 18 months.
“We hope by 2021, not only the residents from Pulau Tikus, but all the people in Penang will be able to enjoy a new waterfront in Gurney Wharf.
“This is in line with the state’s Penang2030 vision of becoming a green and smart state that can inspire the nation,” Chow said in his speech at the Pulau Tikus constituency’s Chinese New Year open house today.
Also present were Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit, Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai and state Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
The Gurney Wharf project is a state government initiative and intended as the state first reclaimed waterfront.
Among the components in the project are a promenade, a park, a skating rink, a children’s playground and a man-made beach.
On a separate note, Chow also urged the public to be careful and cautious of the fake news regarding the state government and Federal Government.
“I would like to remind the public to always get the right information regarding the state and Federal government policies and initiatives from verified sources only, such as through the government agencies and trusted mainstream media.
“This is to prevent misunderstanding among the people towards the state government and Federal Government.
“At the same time, I hope the people in Penang will continue to support the state government because through your support only, we will become more motivated to deliver our best for the people,” Chow added.
During the open house, the guests were served with a variety of food while being entertained by some energetic and captivating Chinese orchestra performances.
