The Penang government has approved the establishment of a Disaster Humanitarian Logistics Centre to prepare for any possible disaster in the state.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the logistics centre would house or store the necessary assets or items for the purpose of disaster management.

“The estimated cost for the setting up of this centre is about RM6.5 million. We will construct a single-storey building with an area of 14,000sq ft. It will also have a parking area for lorry equipment and other machinery, and also a space for a helipad.

“The project will be implemented on government-owned land at Jalan Chan Ewe Pin Mukim 14 in Central Seberang Perai,” he said during his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

He said this in response to a question from Yusni Mat Piah (PN-Penaga).

In the meantime, Chow, who is also the Exco for Land & Economic Development and Communications, said the state government would also consider the proposal that the management of premises and buildings around Clan Jetty be taken over by the Chief Minister’s Corporation (CMI).

“The management model at Weld Quay will be used for the Clan Jetty area, where the related land will be owned by CMI and the commercial buildings on the land will be leased to the original occupants for a certain period through a rental or lease agreement.

“With this method, the state government will ensure that the buildings in the Clan Jetty area are well maintained,” he said in response to the proposal by Danial Gooi Zi Sen (PH-Pengkalan Kota).
