THE 100th anniversary of the Penang Hill funicular railway was celebrated in a big bash today, marking the historic maiden journey that took place on Oct 21, 1923.
This significant event in the state’s history represented the opening of doors to a world of stunning natural beauty and panoramic vistas. The funicular railway has been instrumental in providing access to the lush landscape and breathtaking views of Penang.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present during the gala dinner hosted at G Hotel, lauded the railway’s remarkable century of memories. He emphasised that it reflects the transformative journey of the Penang Hill funicular railway.
“Over the years, the Penang government and the Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) have undertaken various initiatives to continuously improve the infrastructure and amenities on the hill.
“These efforts have been carried out through harmonious alignment with conservation efforts, and unwavering commitment to safety and reliability through slope stabilisation and maintenance works. This also includes the development of the forward planning Penang Hill Summit Area Concept Master Plan.
” Tonight’s gala dinner is not just a celebration of the past, but also an opportunity to look forward to the future.
“We are committed to enhancing the Penang Hill experience, making it more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for everyone,” he said in his speech during the Penang Hill funicular railway centenary celebration.
Chow said the celebration was to recognise the dedication and hard work of the funicular railway contributors, including the funicular design engineer, A. R. Johnson.
Chow also mentioned a few projects in the pipeline aimed at further elevating Penang Hill.
Among the notable projects are the ongoing Upper Station, the upcoming endeavours such as the redevelopment of Cliff Café (Astaka), the creation of a second gallery (after the Gallery @Edgecliff), known as the Gallery @Gatehouse with immersive reality technology, and the redevelopment of Coolie Line (Phase 6 development).
Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak was also present to grace the dinner event.
Those present were entertained by captivating stage performances and a sumptuous dinner.
Among those distinguished guests present were former chief ministers Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Lim Guan Eng, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohammad Abdul Hamid, State Secretary Datuk Rosli Isa as well as Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng.
