THE Penang Housing Board is set to ramp up the state’s efforts in delivering 220,000 units of various affordable homes by 2030.

It is understood that the Penang Housing Board came into full operations from January this year.

State Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the Housing Board would call for a tender by the end of this month for interested contractors to participate in its first affordable housing project on the Penang island.

This is in line with the Penang2030 vision which is to realise ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.

Jagdeep said the effort is the start of many initiatives to come.

“The project, which will consist of 253 low medium-cost units and 1,014 affordable units, is set to be built on a land measuring 7.6 acres in size that has been identified in Bukit Gedung, Bayan Baru.

“The low medium-cost unit will be sold at RM72,500 while the affordable unit at RM270,000.

“Facilities such as swimming pool, gymnasium, multipurpose hall and children’s playground will be provided here.

“Twenty-one three-storey commercial units will also be built,” Jagdeep said during a virtual press conference from Komtar today.

He said that building works are expected to start in January 2022 and the project is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

Separately, Jagdeep said since 2008 until today, a total of 119,116 units of various affordable homes have been provided.

“A total of 38,149 have been built, 18,519 are being built, and 62,448 have been approved to be built in Penang.
