For the first time in nearly 45 years, the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta has returned to a location near the iconic waters off Gurney Drive.

This year marks the 45th edition of the race, now being held at Straits Quay Marina in Tanjong Tokong — a first for the regatta.

Over 1,600 racers from 61 local and foreign teams have gathered for the two-day competition, which kicked off today and concludes tomorrow (Nov 24).

Participants hail from China, Hong Kong SAR, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, and Malaysia, among others.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow addressed the significance of the venue change during the opening ceremony.

“The race has traditionally been held at the Teluk Bahang Dam since the 1990s. However, this year’s low water levels at the dam necessitated a shift to a new location,” Chow explained.

“Straits Quay Marina is an ideal choice. It not only offers a picturesque setting but also brings the race closer to its historical roots.

“In the 1970s and 1980s, the waters off Gurney Drive served as the original venue for this event. Sea reclamation developments over the years led to the race being moved to Teluk Bahang.

“Now, after almost 45 years, we are thrilled to return to a venue so close to Gurney Drive. This year’s regatta is particularly special as participants and spectators can enjoy the unique combination of racing and waterfront activities at Straits Quay,” he said.

A new chapter for the regatta

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai also highlighted the advantages of the new venue.

“This waterfront location not only provides an enhanced experience for racers and spectators but also underscores Penang’s commitment to evolving and elevating its events.

“By relocating the regatta closer to the public, we aim to create a vibrant celebration that showcases Penang’s unique culture and hospitality,” Wong said, expressing gratitude to the main venue sponsor, Eastern and Oriental Berhad, for their support.

The event was graced by several key figures, including state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, and consul general of China in Penang Zhou Youbin.

A celebration beyond racing

In addition to the races, attendees can look forward to various activities and entertainment at Straits Quay, making this year’s regatta a dynamic and inclusive event for all.

The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta not only celebrates athleticism and teamwork but also reflects Penang’s enduring spirit of innovation and community engagement.
