For the second consecutive year, the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta 2025 will be held at Straits Quay Marina from Nov 28 to 30.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said last year’s event was relocated from Teluk Bahang Dam to Straits Quay Marina due to low water levels.
Wong noted that the water capacity at Teluk Bahang Dam currently stands at 55%, compared to 77% during the same period last year.

“Given these conditions, we have once again chosen Straits Quay Marina as the venue, and we hope it will continue to draw more people,” he said.
“This event is more than just a sporting competition – it is a testament to our island’s rich heritage, vibrant culture, and growing reputation as a premier global sporting destination,” he said during a press conference in Komtar.
Wong highlighted that dragon boat racing has deep roots in Penang, with local authorities recognising it as a sporting activity as early as 1934.
The sport gained popularity, leading to the first official race in 1956 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the George Town Municipal Council.
“Over the decades, Penang has remained at the forefront of dragon boat racing in Malaysia. We are proud to host a regatta that not only honours this long-standing tradition but also continues to grow, attracting more participants, spectators, and media attention each year,” he said.
According to Wong, the regatta has seen a surge in international participation and tourism interest, drawing thousands of visitors. Last year, about 100,000 participants and spectators were recorded.
This year’s competition will feature 250m and 400m races, along with a Tug of War event, while Wong also welcomed teams across multiple divisions, including the Premier Open, International Junior U24, and International Senior 40.
Meanwhile, Wong also announced the three winners of the Penang Chingay Parade Photography Competition last year.

The three winners – Jeremy Chew, Ron Yeoh, and Ho Wai Lok – each received RM688 for their achievements.
