IN a significant diplomatic gesture, the Ambassador of Japan in Malaysia, Takahashi Katsuhiko paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow this afternoon, aiming to reinforce and deepen the existing bilateral relationships between the two entities.
The meeting, held at the Penang Chief Minister’s office in Komtar, was marked by a warm exchange of pleasantries and a discussion on fostering collaboration in various spheres, ranging from trade and economic development to cultural exchanges.
During the meeting, Ambassador Takahashi expressed heartfelt gratitude for the continuous support provided by Penang to Japan, emphasising the historical ties that bind the two regions.
The ambassador commended the proactive efforts taken by Penang in promoting friendly relations and cooperation over the years, underscoring the importance of such friendship in today’s interconnected world.
“Penang has been supportive of the Japanese communities in the state. We have a sizable community here and we fully appreciate your support.
“Various cultural exchanges and activities are also held in Penang over the years, thanks to the close ties between Japan and Penang,” he said during the meeting.
Chow, in turn, extended a warm welcome to the ambassador, highlighting the shared values and mutual interests that form the foundation of the strong ties between the state and Japan. The Chief Minister emphasised the need for continued collaboration to address global challenges and foster economic growth.
One of the key points of discussion was the promotion of cultural exchange programmes to deepen the understanding and appreciation of each other’s heritage.
Other issues discussed include water-related challenges in Penang and potential technological advancements in addressing the water challenges.
Also present at the meeting were the consul-general of Japan in Penang Kawaguchi Yoshiyasu, and consul Kuroe Kosuke.
