PENANG has once again come out top in the country as the state with the highest recycling rate for last year.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the state achieved an overall of 42.69 percent of recycling rate, surpassing the national average rate of 24 percent.

He said the results shown that the state was on the right track in terms of recycling.

“I’m extremely happy with this remarkable feat and I hope more achievements will follow.

“We will not stop here but will continue progressing to achieve the highest rate.

“It is in line with our aim of being a cleaner, greener and safer city,” he said at a press conference in Komtar today.

Jagdeep added that the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) had even targeted to achieve 70 percent recycling rate by 2022.

“It’s a bold target set by them but I hope they can achieve it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep said the state was considering a proposal to build an incinerator as a waste disposal solution.

He said the state accepted the proposal for the incinerator to be built in the state due to its current advanced technological process.

“It will have a lesser impact on the environment,” he said.

Also present was MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.
