PENANG continues to maintain its position as a crucial link in the global supply chain despite the disruptions caused by Covid-19, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.
Chow said the global supply chain disruptions had also provided opportunities to some sectors in the state.
“The manufacturing and services sectors are the state’s twin engine of growth. The manufacturing sector went through the pandemic well.
“We had very good results in total approved manufacturing investments in 2019 and 2020.
“Last year, we saw many investors who had decided to invest in Penang setting up their plants in the state. I believe that the construction works would continue this year,” Chow told the High Commissioner of Australia to Malaysia Dr Justin Lee during the latter’s courtesy visit in Komtar today.
Justin was present with his spouse, Jeane Lee.
Justin expressed the interest of the Australian government to strengthen ties and cooperation between Australia and Penang.
“Our stronger sectors are agricultural trade, food, and beverage,” he said.
Justin said it has been a difficult period for the tourism sector.
“We are also interested to continue facilitating business and investment,” he added.
The meeting touched on several topics which include, the Covid-19 situation in Penang, human capital, employment opportunity, and the hotel industry.
Both Chow and Justin exchanged mementos at the end of the fruitful meeting.
