THE Penang Masters Athletics Association (PMAA), formerly known as Penang Veterans Athletics Association, received a two-star rating from the Sports Commissioner’s Office recently.
PMAA was one of the 99 bodies given star ratings by a panel of four judges, based on their assessment of the respective associations’ objectives, organisational management, financial, core services and activities. It is learned that there are about 10,000 registered bodies under the Sports Commissioner’s Office.
PMAA secretary Podim Hatia said the recognition was an honour for his association which has been organising activities for its members and the public since its formation 34 years ago. The activities include road runs, virtual run during the pandemic, and extreme competitions.
“We’re proud to receive this award. I must credit my committee members for their teamwork, commitment and sacrifices,” Podim said.
One of the most exciting activities that PMAA held this year was its inaugural 79km Pearl of the Orient Ultra Run, an extreme sports which was open to individuals as well as teams (two members per relay team).
Out of 418 participants, over 300 participants finished the ultra marathon race in May.
It was sanctioned by the Penang Youth and Sports Office and the Penang State Sports Council.
“It was like a festival. The enthusiastic mood shown by the participants gave us, the organisers, the inspiration to serve from night to day as they took part in the run from 9pm (May 28) to 11am (May 29).
“On top of that, about 300 police personnel were involved and they did a fantastic job ensuring the safety of the athletes,” Podim said.
