PENANG has been selected as one of Oceania Cruises’ ports of call on its 2025 voyage through Asia, scheduled between January and May, marking a significant milestone for the state’s tourism sector.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai noted that the announcement enhances Penang’s growing prominence as a global cruise destination.
“Our cruise terminal at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) has played a pivotal role in supporting the growth of cruise tourism in Penang.
“In 2023 alone, SPCT welcomed a total of 573,178 international transit passengers, along with 175,532 local passengers.
“These impressive numbers reflect the terminal’s capacity to handle large volumes of visitors efficiently, further establishing Penang as a key maritime hub in the region.
“The recent upgrades to our terminal facilities, including the extension of our berths and the enhancement of passenger amenities, have positioned SPCT as one of the leading cruise terminals in the region,” Wong said during the Oceania Cruises launch at Marriott Hotel recently.
Wong shared that the collaboration with Oceania Cruises is expected to stimulate local businesses, create jobs, and promote broader economic development across various sectors.
“The partnership with Oceania Cruises is anticipated to attract additional investments and position Penang as a potential home port in the future,” he added.
The Regatta cruise line will carry up to 670 guests to various iconic destinations, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Penang, Malaysia.
Meanwhile, other cruise lines set to call to the port of Penang are Riviera (1,250 passengers), Insignia (670 passengers) and Nautical (670 passengers).
Oceania Cruises has partnered with Xpedition Travel to bring more passengers to the region and boost tourism.
