THE renowned Penang Pacific West Dragon Boat Club is set to represent Malaysia at the 15th Asian Dragon Boat Championship, which will be held in Hong Kong’s Kwun Tong Promenade, from Oct 11 to 13.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai praised the team for establishing itself as a powerhouse in the world of dragon boating.
“This squad is a beacon of teamwork, resilience, and excellence. Pacific West is a testament to the strength of unity.
“By bringing together paddlers from different walks of life, the team fosters a spirit of camaraderie and perseverance that propels them to greater heights,” Wong said during a press conference in Komtar today.
Wong highlighted that the team has been consistently training at the Tanjung Bungah waterfronts, demonstrating their commitment to the sport.
Over the years, the team has finished at the top in several events at the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta from 2017 to 2023.
The team has also succeeded on the local and international stages, with notable performances in South Korea, Pendang, and Selangor.
“I look forward to witnessing their triumphs next month,” he added.
Team spokesman Low Kah Choon shared that the team is now undergoing intensive daily training in preparation for the event.
“We train for up to three hours a day, rain or shine. We are fully prepared and aim to achieve remarkable results at the competition,” he said.
He noted that the Hong Kong event will see participation from more than 10 countries, with Penang Pacific West sending a 22-member team to compete.
Coach Lawrence Khor and other team members were also present at the press conference.
