Penang PH leaders to meet counterparts from state Umno/Barisan Nasional over seat distribution next week

PENANG Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership will be meeting its counterparts from Umno/Barisan Nasional (BN) next week to discuss seat distribution for the coming state election, says state PH chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who is also the Chief Minister.

He said the state PH had finalised its seat distribution at a meeting last night and would be meeting Umno / BN leaders to see if their views are also in line with the state PH decision.

“I hope we can all agree to the seat distribution for the coming PRN (state election) so that we do not have to refer the matter to our respective national leadership.

“As agreed by both national leaderships, the incumbent seats will remain as they are unless the incumbent wants to give up his or her seat.

“So far, there is no incumbent who has indicated so. However, we are open to swapping seats, even if it involves other states,” Chow said in response to reporters who wanted to know about the outcome of the state PH meeting last night.

Chow had earlier officiated the opening of the 2023 Penang Wesak Day Celebration opening ceremony at the Malaysian Buddhist Association on Jalan Burma.

In the coming state election, there are 40 seats up for grabs.

PH currently dominates the state assembly with 33 seats through DAP (19), PKR (12) and Amanah (2). BN has two seats through Umno, while the sole opposition member is from PAS, a member of the Perikatan Nasional. Four seats have been declared vacant in the last State Assembly sitting for going against the state anti-hopping law.
