Penang picks two women as senators

THE Penang State Legislative Assembly today has chosen lawyer Fadhlina Siddiq and Lim Hui Ying to serve as senators for a three-year term.

The motion to appoint Fadhlina was proposed by Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman (PH-Pinang Tunggal) and was seconded by state Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng (PH-Padang Lalang).

Meanwhile, Lim’s appointment was proposed by Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy (PH-Prai) and was seconded by state Entrepreneurial Development, Trade and Industry Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain (PH-Batu Maung).

The state assembly then unanimously supported the motion.

Fadhlina, 44, replaces Mohd Yusmadi Mohd Yusoff, whose term as senator ended on Aug 26.

She is the daughter of former Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) president Datuk Dr Siddiq Fadzil.

She is also the chairman of PKR Legal Bureau and Women’s Community Development (Biro Guaman dan Pembangunan Komuniti Wanita).

Fadhlina is also active in various non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as Pergerakan Puteri Islam Malaysia (PPIM) in defending women’s rights and children.

Meanwhile, Lim, 58, who was previously also a senator, has been the Penang DAP secretary since November 2013.

She is also the secretary of the Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition since May 2019.
