Penang prioritises talent development

TALENT issues in Penang can be addressed accordingly through the initiatives and plans that are being rolled out by the state government.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who chaired the Penang Socio-Economic Recovery Consultative Council (PSERCC) meeting, said the state emphasises the importance of talent development.

He said the state strived to focus more on talent development and enhancement.

“Penang Skills Development Corporation (PSDC) is a skill development centre and one of the premier talent development institutions in the state.

“It is a platform to engage the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) industry,” he said during the two-hour meeting in Komtar.

The meeting discussed about talent shortage in the state when Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy highlighted the need to focus on talent development.

The PSERCC meeting also touched on the state’s tourism sector which saw a strong recovery post-Covid-19 pandemic.

“The sector has recovered well and many initiatives have been done,” he said.

Separately, state Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari spoke about the state’s efforts in addressing traffic congestion.

Speaking about the proposed Bayan Lepas Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, he said five firms have passed the pre-qualification process and would be invited to take part in the Request for Proposal (RFP) exercise.

Zairil said the state viewed traffic congestion matters seriously and has plans to address the issue.

Other issues on the industry workforce, investments, affordable housing, food security, Penang ferry, and tourism development were also discussed during the meeting.

Among those present were Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, state Agrotech and Food Security, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin, state Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, Penang Port Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza and former Penang Rehda chairman Datuk Toh Chin Leong.
