THE 2024 Bardhan Cup promises thrilling action as the opening match kicks off in Penang, with teams from across Malaysia competing for the prestigious champion’s trophy and a grand prize of RM10,000.
Penang’s campaign begins on Friday, Dec 6, at the iconic City Stadium, where they will host Perlis in a 4pm showdown. Fielding an entirely new Under-23 squad, Penang is determined to make a bold statement on their home turf.
From a rigorous selection process that saw 140 hopefuls vying for a spot, only 25 players earned their place, reflecting the meticulous effort of the coaching staff.
Having narrowly missed the title last year after a 1-0 loss to Negeri Sembilan, Penang is hungry to reclaim the Bardhan Cup – last lifted nearly 15 years ago.
Head coach S. Thinagaran expressed confidence in the team’s preparation during a Dec 1 media conference in Paya Terubong.
“This marks a complete reformation – a fresh start for Penang football.
“Our players have shown incredible commitment, mental resilience, and physical readiness.
“Finalising the squad was no easy task, but the selected 25 have proven their dedication and ability. We are focused, composed, and ready to compete,” Thinagaran said.
The coaching team emphasised key selection criteria, prioritising creativity in play, unwavering passion, and full commitment to the sport.
The Bardhan Cup, an annual tournament organised by the Malaysian Indian Football Association (MIFA), has returned to full swing following a hiatus. This year’s edition features 12 teams and will run until late January 2025.
The team’s home and away jerseys were unveiled in a special ceremony on Dec 1, officiated by Batu Uban assemblyman Kumaresan Arumugam and Penang MIC president Datuk J. Dhinagaran.
Kumaresan encouraged the players to approach the tournament with focus and enthusiasm, stating: “This event deserves greater support, especially from the Indian community and potential sponsors.”
Dhinagaran highlighted the Bardhan Cup’s role in fostering unity among Indian football players in Malaysia, while team manager Haydriaan Dass praised the harmony within the squad, which includes three non-Indian players.
“The players have displayed exceptional teamwork despite their differences, which will be vital as we face this major tournament,” Haydriaan said.
Key players to watch include midfielders P. Sharvin, known for his versatility, and C. Mahesh, another rising talent expected to shine.
Coach Thinagaran also acknowledged the contributions of his dedicated coaching staff, including M. Yogesh, Samual, Sivaji, G. Kathirvel, Kalai, Suresh, Krishna, and V. Venuugopal.
With a fresh lineup, renewed focus, and unwavering determination, Penang is ready to make its mark in the Bardhan Cup 2024.
Also present during the jersey launching ceremony was PIFA president P. Premkumar, donors, and supporters.
