THE Penang Rifle Club (PRC) held its biennial gathering today, celebrating the occasion with special guests, former Thomas Cup captain Datuk Teh Kew San and his wife, Datin Ng Mei Ling, during a dinner at its Jalan Kebun Bunga premises near the Botanic Gardens.
PRC president Datuk Seri Kenny Ong, who is also the chairman of the MTT Group of Companies, expressed the club’s gratitude to Kew San for his remarkable contributions to Malaysian badminton and other sports at the state level.
“It’s an honour to welcome a badminton legend among us,” Ong said in his brief opening speech.
PRC secretary Lim Toh Huan shared his admiration for Kew San, noting his humility alongside his achievements on the badminton court.
Kew San, now 89, led the Malaysian team to victory over Indonesia in the 1967 Thomas Cup final.
Distinguished guests included state Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, state Local Government and Town & Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, and Penang State Sports Council director Harry Chai Heng Hua.
The event also celebrated the achievements of PRC’s shooters who won medals at Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Sarawak.
Penang earned four silver and one bronze medals, with Nur Sumayyah Dzulkifli, her younger sister Nur Maisarah, and Siti Zulaika Haira securing the team silver in the 10m air rifle event. Additionally, Nur Sumayyah, Tan Ying Ying, and Siti Zulaika took bronze in the 50m rifle prone, while Nur Sumayyah claimed an individual silver in the 50m rifle (3 positions), and Nur Maisarah won an individual silver in the 10m air rifle.
Coach Faizah Ab Aziz said they would prepare earnestly for the next Sukma and extended her gratitude to the Penang Rifle Club and Penang State Sports Council for their steadfast support.
She was particularly pleased that Nur Sumayyah, who joined the National Junior squad in March, has been selected to represent Malaysia in an upcoming international competition in Taiwan next month.
The evening featured a live band, creating a vibrant atmosphere, while many attendees left the dinner with smiles, having won lucky draw prizes.
