THE 100km round island cycling event, ‘Towards Cycling City Penang (TCCP)’, will start off at the Car Free Zone in Downing Street on Oct 13 at 7am.

So far, 1,726 cyclists have registered for the event.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said participants would cycle to Penang ferry terminal, then head towards Jelutong expressway before they enter the industrial zone of Bayan Baru.

“After Teluk Kumbar, they will start to climb a few steep hills at Bukit Genting descending to rural Balik Pulau with its numerous orchards and finally passes by the tourist belt of Batu Ferringhi and back to Downing Street.

“Out of the 1,726 participants, 10% are foreigners. Only 38% are from Penang and the others are from other states in the country.

“This is one of the most anticipated yearly events in Penang and has attracted many outstation and overseas cyclists. We expect more than 2,000 cyclists on the day as many non-registered riders will join in as well,” he said.

Soon said the TCCP would be held in conjunction with National Sports Day (Hari Sukan Negara) to create awareness towards Penang 2030 vision as one of the themes was to encourage Penangites to live a healthy lifestyle.

Also present were Ideal Property Group chief operating officer Datuk Goh Teng Whoo, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) assistant director of community service Khairol Izwan Salamat and TCCP organising chairman Kenny Th’ng.

Goh said TCCP has set a fresh vision for all Penangites in order to build and greener environment for our generations to come.

“Looking at the past record of ‘Campaign for A Lane’, the event has successfully attracted more local interest to join cycling activities.

“Therefore we trust that TCCP will continue to receive strong support from locals as well as international cyclists to promote this green vision,” Goh said.
