In view of the upcoming 66th Malaysian Independence Day, the Penang Shirdi Sai Baba Centre distributed Malaysian flags and free food to gold and jewellery shop operators and customers in George Town on Aug 20.

State Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim participated in the giveaway session, covering Queen Street and Market Street, where most of the Indian boutiques, gold and jewellery shops as well restaurants are located.

According to Shirdi Sai Baba Society of Malaysia chairman Kannan Baba, the centre prepared ice kacang and lunch meals for 350 people and some 1,000 flags.

“We have 17 Sai Baba centres throughout Malaysia, and Penang was the first state to initiate this flag and free food distribution for the public 10 years ago.

“Although we prepare free meals for all daily, doing this noble cause during August when we celebrate our Independence Day makes it a lot more unique.

“Our mission is simple: to continue what Shirdi Sai Baba (Indian spiritual master) had started long ago.

“And that is to feed the people regardless of their race, religion or background.

“As for the distribution of the flag, it is a testament to our collective love for our beloved nation, Malaysia.

“We would like to thank YB Lim Siew Khim for being here on behalf of our Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was not able to make it,” Kannan told the reporters at the centre on Aug 20.

Meanwhile, Lim expressed her admiration for the commendable efforts of the centre, especially in providing free meals throughout the day.

“This selfless act reflects the very essence of compassion and community service by the centre.

“In addition to these generous initiatives, it warms my heart to learn about the extensive range of activities carried out by the centre over the past 15 years.

“What makes today more special is walking along the streets here, having a light moment with the shop operators and customers, while giving out the mini Jalur Gemilang.

“May the spirit of Shirdi Sai Baba guide us as we continue our journey towards a harmonious and united Malaysia,” Lim said.
