THIS year’s Penang State Christmas Celebration 2024 will take place at Padang Dataran Pemuda Merdeka in Butterworth on Dec 7 from 5pm to 10pm, according to Lim Siew Khim, the state executive councillor for Social Development, Welfare and non-Islamic Religious Affairs.
Lim highlighted that in recent years, the event has alternated between Penang Island and the mainland to make it more accessible and to encourage greater community participation.
“We have planned exciting activities for everyone, including a vibrant Christmas market, engaging performances, delicious food from food trucks, and much more. It promises to be an evening filled with festive cheer and wonderful experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds,” Lim, who also chairs the Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico) and is the Sungai Pinang assemblyman, announced at a press conference held at Harmonico today.
The theme for this year’s Penang State Christmas Celebration is “Tidings of Great Joy,” encapsulating the essence of Christmas — spreading joy, hope, and love.
“This theme serves as a reminder that, regardless of our backgrounds, we can come together to share in the joy of the season. As we gather to celebrate Christmas, we embrace the spirit of togetherness and shared joy. This event is more than just a festive occasion; it is a meaningful opportunity to learn from one another, celebrate our diversity, and foster harmony within our community,” Lim said.
It is the first time the celebration will be held in Butterworth, and the fourth time it will take place in Seberang Perai, with previous celebrations often hosted at Fort Cornwallis or the Esplanade on the island.
Lim emphasised the state’s commitment to celebrating diversity through various religious festivities. “The Penang government, in collaboration with different faith organisations, aims to empower community members to actively shape these events, fostering understanding and highlighting the beauty in our differences,” she added.
The celebration is a collaborative effort between the Penang government, through Harmonico, and key partners such as the Christian Federation of Malaysia (Penang Chapter) and local churches. They are working closely with the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to organise the event.
Also present at the press conference were Arokiadass Anthonysamy, chairman of the Christian Federation of Malaysia (Penang chapter) and a director of Harmonico; Bishop Rev Dr Stephen Soe, the organising chairman; several members of the organising committee; Wan Atikah, Penang Harmony Corporation’s head of programme management; and volunteer Samuel Gopal.
Bishop Soe said the collaboration between the Penang state and Harmonico for this celebration reflects the strength of the community and shared values.
Recognising the hard work of its organising committee, which includes representatives from various churches and denominations, he said they are excited to come together to create lasting memories this Christmas.
Soe noted that after facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, previous Christmas celebrations embraced themes of hope and recovery. Last year, the theme was “Light of the World,” symbolising renewed optimism.
“This year’s theme, Tidings of Great Joy, reflects our collective journey. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating joy, happiness, and gratitude. Together, let us create a Christmas celebration that embodies these values while recognising the many blessings we’ve received,” Soe said.
He added that there will be a free community dinner during the Christmas Open House, encouraging people to arrive early.
Soe also announced that registration is open for vendors, performers, and volunteers for the Christmas market. Vendors from both the Christian community and the wider public are encouraged to visit Harmonico’s website at harmonico.my for more details. Talented performers interested in participating are invited to contact Eric Lim at 013-480 8670.
