THE Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) monopole transmission tower project near the Penang Bridge now features vibrant, illuminated lights, adding a colourful spectacle to Penang’s night skyline.
State Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari shared that during the project’s construction, the state government had proposed incorporating lighting into the transmission towers to make them a unique attraction.
The 8.5 km monopole transmission tower was fully completed and became operational on December 22 last year.
“There are 200 different colour palettes, with colours chosen based on various themes, such as during major celebrations like Merdeka Day,” Zairil explained.
He also shared that TNB plans to host an official opening ceremony for the monopole within the next two months.
On December 31, 2024, the lighting was officially launched by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak. The display featured blue, yellow, and white lights representing the Penang flag, adding a festive touch to the New Year celebrations.
“The lights will be displayed starting from 7pm to 4am daily,” he added.
The monopole transmission tower connects the Perai Power Station (SJ) Main Inlet Substation (PMU) to the Light PMU in Penang. It strengthens Penang’s electricity supply by providing a direct connection from the national grid via overhead line transmission from the mainland, ensuring a stable electricity supply for the island.
It also brings a direct connection of electricity supply from the national grid to Penang through overhead line transmission from the mainland to maintain the island’s electricity supply.
