PENANG’S paddy yield is projected to increase next year as the state government explores adopting an innovative photosynthesis enhancer to boost production.
State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol shared that the groundbreaking technology, developed by a professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia, is the first of its kind on the market.
“We understand it can increase paddy yield by 20% to 40%. The photosynthesis enhancer works by improving the efficiency of photosynthesis in plants,” he told Buletin Mutiara during an interview at his office.
Fahmi revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has agreed in principle to allocate RM2 million to support Penang’s acquisition of the technology.
“We hope to kickstart the initiative by the middle of next year. Despite its small size, Penang takes pride in achieving the highest average rice production,” he said.
The pilot programme will initially be implemented at Stesen Padi Bukit Merah in Permatang Pauh before expanding to other districts across the state.
Fahmi also expressed optimism that the initiative would not only boost Penang’s paddy production but also invigorate the agricultural sector by encouraging greater youth involvement in rice cultivation.
“With the integration of cutting-edge technology like the photosynthesis enhancer, we aim to show that farming can be both innovative and profitable,” he stated.
He underscored the need to modernise traditional agricultural practices to make the industry more appealing and sustainable for the younger generation.
“Fostering youth participation is crucial to sustaining the growth of the agricultural sector and ensuring the long-term food security of both the state and the nation,” Fahmi added.
