THE Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) plays a significant role with regard to the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) industry in the Penang, says state Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.
“We (Penang) do not only rely on the leisure tourism but also the business tourism. So, the PCEB plays a pivotal role to position Penang a premier business tourism hub.
“In order to sustain the tourism industry, we will continue to market and promote Penang as the MICE activity hub.
“According to study, business tourists are willing to spend more compared to leisure tourists, so business tourism is expected to be one of the key sectors and the gross market that we will continue to focus on,’’ Yeoh told a press conference today.
He was announcing the Asia Pacific Rotaract Conference (APRRC) that would be held in September at the St Giles Wembley.
PCEB chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekeran said the conference would serve as a platform to understand the cultural diversity of the countries from the Asia Pacific.
“We are expecting some 600 participants from various countries in the Asia Pacific region to take part in the conference that will be held from Sept 3 till Sept 6.
“This will help to further build the community by sharing ideas and solutions to improve the physical and social needs.
“At the same time, it is also to promote international understanding and peace through the framework of friendship and services.
“Apart from that, the conference will also help the participants to develop more creative views and ideas into action which will be bring out benefits within and outside the Rotaract community,’’ Ashwin said.
