PENANG is gearing up to host the International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ICBES) for the third time in November.

The event is jointly organised by Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm and the International Association of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (IABES).

Nearly 100 participants from 19 countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, are expected to attend.

Scheduled to take place from Nov 4 to 7, the conference will focus on discussing advancements and collaborations in butterfly conservation.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said Penang, with its lush landscapes and rich biodiversity, is the perfect place for this event.

“We are proud to highlight our commitment to sustainable tourism through this conference, which aims to protect our natural surroundings while supporting the local community.

“The 2024 International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers is not merely about the business of butterfly exhibitions but also about fostering a deeper cultural and educational understanding.

“The state government will continue to support such initiatives, working hand in hand with international partners to promote tourism and the creative industries in ways that benefit all,” he said during a press conference at Entopia on Aug 28.

Wong also shared that biodiversity is another niche market which should explored to boost local economy.

“We are home to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which stretch from Penang Hill to Botanical Garden and to Teluk Bahang. Penang is already renowned for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty.

“By developing world-class butterfly exhibitions and fostering partnerships with suppliers, we can attract more eco-tourists to our shores.

“The unique appeal of butterflies, combined with our cultural and natural attractions, will make Penang an irresistible destination for nature lovers and conservationists worldwide.

“The butterfly industry offers various opportunities for job creation, from butterfly farming and conservation work to exhibition design and tourism services,” he added.

Wong, who is also the Paya Terubong assemblyman, said that local businesses, especially in tourism and hospitality, would benefit from the increased number of visitors drawn to butterfly-related activities and events.

Entopia’s chief executive officer Joseph Goh said that one of the event’s highlights will be the Opening Dinner, which will take place at the Hin Bus Depot on Nov 4. The is supported by the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB).

“Participants will get to experience the best of Penang, including a George Town Heritage Tour, a visit to Penang Hill, and a hike in Penang National Park,” Goh said.

Also present was PCEB chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekaran.
