CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced today that the state government is committed to rolling out a series of packaged solutions to mitigate traffic congestion ahead of the completion of Penang’s first Mutiara LRT Line project, slated for 2031.
Addressing calls to expedite restrictions on private car usage, Chow highlighted that a singular approach would be insufficient to address the state’s traffic woes.
Instead, a gradual and multi-faceted strategy is required.
“Rather than imposing a blanket ban on private vehicles, we aim to implement transitional measures such as a two-hour parking limit in busy parts of George Town and enhancing public bus services to boost ridership,” Chow said during his speech at the official opening ceremony of Lyf George Town Penang earlier today.
He added that the state would also explore introducing entry fees for vehicles entering designated zones in George Town as part of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).
“Implementing these changes progressively is crucial to avoid undue stress on road users.
“The Penang Island City Council (MBPP), through its team of traffic planners, plays a vital role in executing these solutions in collaboration with the state government,” he said.
MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran echoed Chow’s sentiments, stressing the importance of improving public transport facilities before imposing limitations on private vehicles.
“The transition from private cars to public transport must happen organically.
“By enhancing bus services and infrastructure, we can encourage more people to use public transport, paving the way for other measures like restricting car access in certain areas,” Rajendran said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mutiara LRT Line at Bandar Sri Pinang on Jan 11, joined by Chow and other state and Federal leaders.
The 29.5-kilometre LRT line will feature 21 elevated stations, 20 of which will be on Penang island and the man-made Silicon Island, with one located at Penang Sentral on the mainland.
Bandar Sri Pinang is among the key stops for this ambitious project.
Today’s event also saw the launch of Lyf George Town Penang, a creative and innovative accommodation concept by Ascott Limited.
Strategically located opposite the iconic Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Lyf aims to redefine the hospitality experience in one of George Town’s busiest areas.
