THERE is vast potential for collaboration between Uzbekistan and Penang in the tourism sector, says state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

Speaking at the Uzbekistan-Malaysia Tourism Forum at St Giles The Wembley Hotel today, Wong highlighted that while Penang and Uzbekistan may be geographically distant, they are united by a shared passion for cultural heritage, tourism, and economic growth.

Wong highlighted that while Penang and Uzbekistan may be geographically distant, they are united by a shared passion for cultural heritage, tourism, and economic growth.

“Uzbekistan is a land of deep historical roots, cultural magnificence, and warm hospitality, making it a fascinating destination for global travellers.

“As we strengthen our tourism ties, I hope this collaboration will not only boost visitor exchanges between Uzbekistan and Penang but also foster mutual understanding and economic opportunities,” he said.

Wong emphasised that Penang, much like Uzbekistan, boasts a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural beauty, and a thriving tourism industry.

“Our strategic location has made us one of Malaysia’s top travel destinations. In 2024, Penang International Airport (PIA) achieved a major milestone, becoming Malaysia’s second busiest airport after Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

“Last year, PIA recorded 7.47 million passengers, marking a 7.07% increase compared to 2023. Since Aug 2023, we have also seen a surge in-flight connectivity, with 12 new international routes linking Penang to major cities such as Dubai, Doha, Shanghai, Xiamen, Hong Kong, and Chennai,” he said.

He noted that Penang is actively expanding its international connectivity, with plans to explore potential direct flights to Central Asia, including Uzbekistan.

“With these ongoing expansion efforts, we anticipate even stronger global connectivity in the coming years, making it easier for travellers from Uzbekistan and beyond to visit Penang,” he added.

Wong also encouraged visitors from Uzbekistan to experience Penang’s rich history, vibrant heritage streets, and world-class museums.

“For Uzbek visitors, Penang’s diverse halal cuisine and fresh seafood will be a delightful culinary experience, reflecting the multicultural flavours of our heritage.

“We also recognise that Uzbekistan has a predominantly Muslim population, and Penang, with its rich Islamic history and abundance of halal-certified dining options, is well-positioned to cater to Muslim travellers seeking a comfortable and welcoming environment,” said Wong.

Wong concluded by expressing confidence that stronger ties between Penang and Uzbekistan would lead to new opportunities for tourism growth, cultural exchange, and business collaboration.

“After all, Penang is not just an ideal place for tourists—it is also a dynamic hub for business, culture, and innovation,” he said.

Uzbekistan tourism committee chairman Umid Shadiev, who was also present, described Uzbekistan as a remarkable travel destination known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture.

Umid described Uzbekistan as a remarkable travel destination known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture.

“Uzbekistan is a unique country, deeply rooted in history and enriched by its role as a major hub of the ancient Silk Road.

“Cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva continue to preserve breathtaking Islamic architecture, bustling bazaars, and traditional caravanserais,” he said.

He also highlighted Uzbekistan’s growing tourism infrastructure.

“This year alone, Uzbekistan has 1,250 hotels with a total capacity of 93,700 beds, ready to accommodate tourists from Penang and Malaysia as a whole,” he said.

Also present today were Tourism Malaysia Northern Region director Abdul Hadi Che Man, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan and Uzbekistan Tourism Committee marketing department head Aziz Mirdjalilov.
