AFTER being held as a hybrid event last year due to Covid-19, the Penang Women’s Assembly 2022 will be conducted physically this year.
Scheduled to happen for the third time after its first in 2020, Chong Eng, the state executive councillor for Non-Islamic Religious Affairs and Social Development, said her office and the Penang Women Development Corporation (PWDC) will be organising the initiative to unearth the talents of women leaders.
“The programme is built comprehensively and it covers areas such as education and understanding, capacity building and a platform to nurture potential women leaders.
“It will also serve as a platform to expose potential women leaders to various topics like politics, women empowerment, good governance, community participation and the importance of gender inclusiveness.
“This is in line with the Penang 2030 vision Theme C, which emphasises the empowerment of the people of Penang to strengthen civic participation,” Chong Eng said in her speech during the announcement of the programme in Komtar today.
She was also delighted to share that the two previous assemblies gained positive responses from active women participants, citing Rachel Teh Chuann Yien, the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) councillor, who was also one of the first few participants for the 2020 edition.
Senator Fadhlina Datuk Sidek, who is the chairman of the Task Force Committee of the Penang Women’s Assembly 2022, said the programme is open to all women aged 18 and above, irrespective of their education, career and political backgrounds.
“The registration is now open and it closes on Aug 5 this year.
“This year’s programme would be conducted in four phases, namely Phase One: Regional Tour (Aug 13-14), Phase Two: Capacity Building Workshop (Sept 10-11), Phase Three: Representative Preparation Workshop (Oct 1) and Phase Four: Conference Day (Nov 12).
“Venues for all the phases would be announced soon,” Fadhlina added.
Among those who took part in the press conference were Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto and PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng.
