THREE… two… one… Lights off!
Visitors at Gurney Paragon Mall showed their support to reduce carbon footprint by taking part in the Earth Hour Zumba and Night Yoga 2019.
Non-essential lights including 80% of the lightings from St Jo’s in Gurney Paragon Mall were turned off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm to mark the Earth Hour celebration.
Hunza Group executive director Khor Tze Ming said this was the first time they collaborated with WWF-Malaysia to organise the Earth Hour event at Gurney Paragon Mall.
“We have also encouraged our retailers to switch off their display lights and signages during the Earth Hour.
“Gurney Paragon Mall, from March 1, has given out 1,000 sets of reusable straws to shoppers through redemption. We have also successfully held the ‘adopt a teddy bear campaign’ to raise funds for WWF-Malaysia,” Khor said in her speech on March 30.
“All the bears were fully adopted within two weeks.”
Khor said Gurney Paragon Mall had helped to generate RM20,000 through the Earth Hour event registration.
“We are also donating RM12,590 from our ‘adopt a teddy bear campaign’ to WWF-Malaysia to fund its conservation efforts.
WWF-Malaysia conservation director Dr Henry Chan said the act of switching off lights is a symbolic way to show that people care about Earth.
“It is to show that we are willing to make changes to our lifestyle to reduce the impact on nature and biodiversity,” he said.
Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh thanked the participants for joining the event.
He invited everyone to come together to save Earth.
Samsonite Malaysia and Celcom also donated RM10,000 each to WWF-Malaysia.
Participants enjoyed the zumba dance and night yoga session during the celebration.
There were also dance performances by Euphoria Penang and exciting lucky draw sessions.
