PENANG is embracing the power of the creative economy as a vital force for innovation, cultural expression, and sustainable development.
According to state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, this dynamic sector is a cornerstone of the Penang2030 vision – a collective ambition to shape a vibrant, diverse economy that bridges local talent and global opportunities.
“Penang’s creative economy isn’t just another sector; it’s a key pillar of our economic strategy and a driving force behind cultural preservation, innovation, and sustainable growth,” Wong stated passionately during the Penang Economic, Education, and Environment Forum 2024 at JEN Hotel in George Town on Dec 10.
From digital content creation to arts, cultural heritage, and creative tourism, Penang’s creative ecosystem celebrates its rich history while carving out new paths for development.
“Our strategy nurtures this vibrant ecosystem by empowering entrepreneurs, fostering talent, and promoting industries such as film, animation, design, and performing arts,” Wong added.
Penang’s creative spirit is woven into its identity.
Iconic elements like George Town’s world-famous street art and the intricate craftsmanship of local batik and kebaya artisans tell stories that resonate far and wide.
“Every corner of Penang is a masterpiece waiting to be discovered.
“As part of this vision, Penang is steadily positioning itself as a regional hub for creativity and innovation through targeted policies, strategic funding, and collaborative partnerships,” Wong said.
The forum, organised by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, the ASEAN Economic Club, and the World Digital Chamber, brought together hundreds of industry players from diverse sectors to explore ways to further propel Penang’s economy.
Wong also highlighted flagship events like the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta and the George Town Festival, which celebrate the state’s unique cultural heritage and invigorate the tourism industry annually.
“Looking ahead, two more exciting events are on the horizon, namely the Penang Bridge International Marathon, now relocated to the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge in Batu Kawan, promises participants an exhilarating new experience while boosting local economic activity.
“Secondly, the Penang Chingay Parade, an event steeped in tradition and artistry, continues to be a festive spectacle that attracts visitors from all walks of life,” Wong added.
The forum was graced by prominent figures, including World Digital Chamber and KSI Strategic Institute Asia Pacific president Tan Sri Michael Yeoh and Majlis Dato’ Dato’ Negeri Pulau Pinang president Datuk Seri Abdul Rafique Abdul Karim, both who underscored the importance of collaboration in shaping the future.
