THE Penang government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of people with disabilities (OKUs) in the state.

Speaking at the closing ceremony for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration at the MUS Penang building on Macalister Road today, Penang Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim emphasised the state government’s dedication to supporting the OKU community through various initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life.

“The state government is committed to ensuring the welfare of persons with disabilities (OKUs) is well taken care of. Several initiatives have been introduced to support them,” she said.

Lim emphasised the state government’s dedication to supporting the OKU community through various initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life.

One key program highlighted was the i-Sejahtera programme, which provides an annual one-time cash assistance of RM200 to all registered OKUs residing in Penang.

“This initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Penang Social Welfare Department (JKM), reflects the state’s efforts to address the immediate needs of OKUs.

“Additionally, the state also offers a one-off funeral assistance of RM1,000 to the next of kin of deceased OKUs, ensuring that families are supported during challenging times.

“These measures demonstrate that the welfare and interests of OKUs remain our top priority,” Lim stated.

This year’s celebration adopted the theme ‘Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.’

Lim highlighted the significance of the theme, noting its focus on empowering OKUs and fostering a more inclusive society.

“Penang JKM, through its Persons with Disabilities department, actively promotes capacity-building activities that enhance the personal development of OKUs.

“These programmes also encourage community engagement and foster a more empathetic and responsible society committed to supporting rehabilitation and growth for OKUs,” said Lim.

She also emphasised that while OKUs may face physical or mental challenges, their resilience in navigating daily life is an inspiration to others.

However, she stressed the need for accessible facilities and adequate support systems to ensure their safety, comfort, and independence.

“OKUs are not weak individuals despite their disabilities. Their strength in overcoming daily challenges often inspires those without disabilities.

“Nonetheless, they still require facilities and assistance to live peacefully, securely, and comfortably,” she concluded.

Also present were Penang JKM director Zakaria Taib, Penang Education Department senior assistant director (special education sector) Ahmad Kamal Abdul Ghani and Penang Cheshire Home chairman Andrew Koi Say Loke.
