TOURISM and hospitality industry players in Penang have been called to embrace technology to enhance visitor experience.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said technologies such as virtual tours allow travellers to explore Penang’s offerings before even setting foot on its shores.

He also stressed that sustainability could not be an afterthought.

“It must be included in every facet of our industry.

“Eco-friendly practices, responsible tourism, and conservation efforts are not just buzzwords but essential components of our roadmap ahead.

“Simultaneously, we must also focus on nurturing talent, as well as providing training and educational opportunities to ensure that our workforce remains globally competitive,” he said in his speech during the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter Biennial Dinner 2023 at St Giles The Wembley Hotel this evening.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your dedication and passion.

“You have contributed towards making our state a travel, culture and experience hub.

“MAH Penang Chapter, in particular, deserves special compliments for its tireless effort in promoting excellence within this industry,” he said.

Chow reassured the stakeholders that the Penang government would continue to support the tourism and hospitality industry.

“We are actively engaging with local and international partners to attract investments that will fuel our growth.

“True to what we have pledged to do, the state government will work on attracting new hotels and expanding the number of direct flights to Penang.

“There will be an intense promotion of high economic value programmes such as exhibitions, performing arts and MICE activities.

“These forthcoming initiatives will not only fortify our economy but also usher in employment prospects. It will also, of course, boost the demand for hotel accommodation,” Chow said.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the services industry is one of Penang’s twin engine of growth.
