AS part of the state government’s sustainability initiative, Penang will strengthen its ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign by moving towards zero ‘single-use plastic bag’ usage, starting March 1.

State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu announced a six-month grace period for businesses and the public to adapt before strict enforcement begins on Sept 1.

In response, Buletin Mutiara conducted street polls to gather public feedback on the initiative.

Batu Maung constituency Youth chairman Nur Shahidah Syed Mohamed praised the move, calling it a significant step in reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable alternatives.

“As a consumer, I believe this is a positive step for the environment.

“Plastic bags take a long time to decompose, and a daily plastic bag-free campaign allows us to shift towards more sustainable practices,” she said.

She commended the distribution of reusable bags and the transition period given by the state, emphasising the need for education and public awareness.

Supporting the initiative, Warna Cuisine restaurant owner Noor Firdaus Shahbudin said it would encourage the use of eco-friendly packaging.

Similarly, vegetable vendor CJ Lim highlighted that Penang has been championing plastic waste reduction since 2008.

“I fully support the government’s decision. The six-month grace period gives businesses ample time to transition. This initiative could also inspire other states to follow suit,” said Lim, 32.

Meanwhile, Chloe Tan Jia Yi, an HR executive in Bayan Lepas, welcomed the initiative.

“I always keep reusable bags in my car, so doing away with plastic bags won’t be a problem,” said Tan, a frequent shopper at markets and hypermarkets.

The state government is also formulating a broader framework to phase out plastic bags and single-use plastics entirely.
