THE highly anticipated Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line marks a significant milestone in Penang’s quest to develop a comprehensive rail network.
Referencing the famous saying, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised that the same principle applies to establishing an efficient rail-based public transport system.
“As Penang progresses, the lack of a robust rail-based public transport system has long posed connectivity issues.
“Drawing parallels to Kuala Lumpur, where the first rail line paved the way for a sprawling network over the past 30 years, Penang is now taking its first step in that direction.
“Without a first line, subsequent expansions cannot materialise.
“The Mutiara LRT Line is the foundation upon which Penang’s future rail network will be built. Once additional lines are established, public transport is expected to become the preferred mode of transportation for the public.
“Public transportation plays a vital role in alleviating traffic congestion, saving time, and offering an efficient solution to the challenges of a rapidly growing city.
“This effort has been years in the making. The proposal for an LRT in Penang dates back to before 2008 but was not implemented.
“After years of planning, perseverance, and waiting, we are finally seeing the first line come to fruition,” Chow replied to journalists after presenting the Penang Heritage Trust Living Heritage Treasures Awards at Bangunan UAB, in China Street Ghaut today.
Meanwhile, regarding the Sungai Pinang site chosen for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mutiara LRT Line this Saturday (Jan 11), Chow reiterated that discussions have been made with the Penang Education Department.
“The land was originally earmarked for the construction of a school.
“The land has been surrendered to the state and designated for the line’s alignment. We will look for alternative sites for the school,” he added.
