AN ongoing awareness of preserving the environment and efforts to instil the consciousness of climate change must be cultivated among the community all the while, says Penang Green Council (PGC) general manager Josephine Tan.

According to her, it is important to instil environmental awareness and knowledge in the public.

“We need to continue our effort to shape their mindset on the importance of saving energy as well as other environmental aspects.

“Earth Day is a symbolic event as we still need an ongoing process to educate the public,” she told Buletin Mutiara during an interview session today.

PGC will celebrate Earth Day at Straits Quay this Saturday with the community through its two programmes. They are ‘Earth Day Celebration 2023: Invest in Our Planet’ and ‘Zero Waste Vlog Challenge@Bazaar Ramadan’.

The ‘Earth Day Celebration 2023: Invest in Our Planet’ is jointly organised by PGC and Junior Chamber International United Penang (JCIUP).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is scheduled to attend Earth Day celebration at 7pm.

Tan said the event covers the pillars of zero waste, circular economy and healthy lifestyle activities.

“Besides that, we will be celebrating Earth Hour as well this Saturday,” she said, adding that Straits Quay and other 74 buildings ranging from government offices, institutions, hotels and factories are all scheduled to switch off their non-essential lights.

Tan hopes more organisations can step up their collaboration with the state government to care for Mother Nature.

On the recycling rate in the state, Tan added the state has achieved 51.18%.

“There are still plenty of initiatives that can be done to ensure our recycling effort is spread among the community widely,” she said.
