IN a heartwarming gesture of inclusivity and compassion, the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) is teaming up with Tamilan Uthavum Karangal (Malaysia Tamilian Helping Hands), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), to bring joy and blessings to individuals with disabilities this Thaipusam.
The special initiative, slated for Feb 2, will see 30 wheelchair-bound devotees carried up to the iconic Hilltop Temple at Thanneer Malai to fulfil their vows and receive blessings ahead of the Thaipusam celebrations on Feb 11.
PHEB vice-chairman Senator RA Dr Lingeshwaran shared the significance of this endeavour, emphasising its dual purpose of assisting persons with disabilities and inspiring youth participation in meaningful, charity-driven events.
“We’ve roped in about 50 dedicated volunteers to assist in carrying these individuals to the main temple.
“For the descent, four-wheelers will be used due to the steep and challenging steps,” he explained in a phone interview.
To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, ambulances and medical personnel will be on standby throughout the event.
The initiative will be officiated by PHEB chairman RSN Rayer, who will honour the volunteers with medals as a token of appreciation for their selfless contributions.
“This effort is not just about physical assistance; it’s about empowering individuals with disabilities to partake in cultural and spiritual traditions. It is a beautiful example of community spirit,” added Lingeshwaran.
Meanwhile, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai expressed his hopes for a joyful and vibrant Thaipusam and Chap Goh Meh season, noting the proximity of the two significant celebrations this year.
While Thaipusam falls on Feb 11, Chap Goh Meh, the grand finale of the Lunar New Year, will be observed on Feb 12.
To ease traffic congestion and ensure smoother festivities, the state-level Chap Goh Meh celebrations have been rescheduled to Feb 14, coinciding with Valentine’s Day.
Wong announced this in a media conference held recently.
“We look forward to welcoming both locals and visitors to experience the rich traditions, spirituality, and cultural vibrance Penang has to offer during this festive period,” Wong said.
