THE Penang International Airport (PIA) expansion project will include flood mitigation measures to address flooding problems at the airport.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) senior manager Mohd Nadzim Hashim said the airport would be designed to accommodate up to 12 million passengers a year.

“Flood mitigation measures will also be part of the expansion project.

“The number of passengers at the airport is growing rapidly.

“We recorded 7.2 million passengers last year and we expect the figure to increase to 7.8 million this year,” he told Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during a courtesy visit today.

Delegates from MAHB paid a courtesy call on Chow to update him on the PIA.

Mohd Nadzim said MAHB hoped to kick off the expansion project by 2020.
