THE Penang International Food Festival (PIFF) 2024 kicked off with thousands of local and international visitors flocking to its opening event today, a celebration of Penang’s vibrant culinary landscape.
This year, the festival spans two weekends, each offering food enthusiasts a unique experience in two distinct locations.
The first event, PIFF @ Tanjung, is currently underway at Beach Street near RHB Bank in George Town on Penang Island, running from Nov 2 to 3. This segment is supported by Deputy Finance Minister and Tanjung MP YB Lim Hui Ying’s office, and is organised by Dreamz.
Following this, PIFF @ Batu Kawan will take place at Design Village in Batu Kawan, Seberang Perai, on Nov 9 and 10, supported by Design Village (PE Land) and organised by TLM.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who was also present, highlighted the festival’s significance as more than a mere gathering of food stalls.
“PIFF is a major catalyst for Penang’s economy and tourism, attracting visitors from near and far.
“Through local vendors, renowned chefs, and small businesses, the festival creates opportunities for growth, collaboration, and shared success within our community.
“Each year, it enhances our reputation as a global food destination,” Wong noted in his speech.
Wong also emphasised that this year’s choice of Beach Street as a venue, located within the heritage-rich zone of George Town, adds to the festival’s allure.
“Surrounded by historic architecture, this area provides visitors with a deeper connection to Penang’s cultural roots and highlights our beautifully preserved colonial landmarks.
“It’s an ideal backdrop for a festival that celebrates not only food but also our city’s heritage and history,” said Wong.
He continued by stating that Penang’s Unesco-listed sites and bustling local businesses are poised to gain increased attention and engagement, amplifying the positive economic impact of the festival.
“Let us celebrate Penang’s unique flavours, rich history, and thriving tourism sector. Together, we can ensure that our food culture continues to shine on the global stage,” he said.
Also present were Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, who is also the Tanjong MP, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
Meanwhile, Lim highlighted the variety of food offerings at PIFF @ Tanjung, which features over 100 food stalls.
“From iconic Penang street foods like char koay teow, nasi lemak, and roti canai to innovative dishes by talented local chefs, there’s something for everyone,” she said.
Lim also encouraged festival-goers to sample from each section, supporting local vendors who sustain Penang’s vibrant food culture.
She concluded by saying, “Penang’s food represents more than flavours — it’s a celebration of the unity and respect shared among Malaysia’s diverse communities. Each dish reflects traditions enjoyed by people from all backgrounds, reminding us of the harmony and tolerance that define us.”
