TODAY, two Pink October carnivals were held in Penang to raise awareness about breast health —  one at the Straits Quay Retail Arena and the other at the newly-opened Sunshine Central in Ayer Itam.

Zairil Khir Johari, the state Executive Councillor for Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital, officiated the event at Straits Quay, while Lim Siew Khim, the state Executive Councillor for Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs, was the guest of honour at the event at Sunshine Central.

Both emphasised the importance of raising awareness about breast cancer, stressing that early detection and healthy lifestyle choices can significantly reduce the risk of the disease.

Zairil noted that many lives could be saved through education about non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

“While cancer can be genetic, certain lifestyle choices, like smoking, increase the risk of developing the disease. It is essential to adopt a healthy lifestyle, avoiding excessive sugar, oil, and fried foods,” said Zairil, who is also the Tanjong Bunga assemblyman.

The theme of the event at Straits Quay was ‘Living Well, Living Together.’

Among those present at the event were Datuk Seri Tan Gin Soon, chairman of the Tanjung Bunga Health Clinic advisory panel; Datuk Hun Keng Kuan, co-chairman of the Tanjung Bunga Health Clinic advisory panel; Mohd Asrul Ismail, chairman of the Tanjung Tokong advisory panel; Dr Leow Hong Tee, Family Medicine Specialist at Tanjung Bunga Health Clinic;  Dr Rozaini Mat Shah, Northeast District Health Office officer; Dr Reysham Kaur Purba, medical officer in charge of Klinik Kesihatan Ibu & Anak Tanjong Tokong, members of Northeast District Information Office, JCI Tanjung Bungah, Penang Chef’s Association Malaysia, Penang Chombi, MPKK Tanjung Bungah, Wellness on Wheel, OOMI Probotics, and Straits Quay.

In his speech, Tan said breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, accounting for 24.2% of new cancer cases and causing 15% of cancer-related deaths in 2018. By 2040, it is projected that there will be three million cases of breast cancer and one million deaths due to the disease globally.

“We hope that all parties, including government agencies, the private sector, and NGOs, will continue to collaborate with the local community in providing the best education and awareness services. This will help those affected cultivate a healthier, more prosperous, and hopeful way of life in the future,” Tan said.

At Sunshine Central, Lim Siew Khim addressed the crowd, noting that with over two million new cases diagnosed annually, prevention and early detection are far more crucial than treatment.

“We are here today to support those brave individuals battling breast cancer and to remind them that they are not alone. The activities today — from HPV vaccinations to blood and hair donations, and the breast cancer survivors’ forum — all reflect the compassion and sense of responsibility our community shows in the fight against cancer.

“The core message is clear: early detection saves lives. Moreover, we aim to build a caring, supportive community. I encourage everyone to actively participate in today’s activities — from health talks to creative exhibitions — and share the knowledge you gain with others.

“I’d like to remind everyone of the importance of taking charge of your health. Regular check-ups, a healthy lifestyle, and supporting one another are key steps to ensuring a brighter, healthier future for ourselves and our families,” said Lim, who also serves as the Sungai Pinang assemblywoman.

Liew expressed her gratitude to all sponsors and supporters for making the event a success. She also noted that the activities were not only designed to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention but also to inspire more people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“Today, we are here not just to experience various health exhibitions but, more importantly, to unite in raising public awareness about breast cancer and improving healthy lifestyles.

“Pink October is more than just part of the breast cancer awareness campaign — it’s a moment filled with strength and warmth. Today’s event covers all aspects, from health prevention to life support. Activities include free HPV vaccinations, blood donation drives, and on-site support from professionals. For instance, we offer free health consultations by nutritionists, rehabilitation guidance from physical therapists, and opportunities for hair donations and organ donor registration.

“We also have special experience activities: paraben-free skincare products, a mandala painting workshop, a children’s clay workshop, creating a fun and creative space for the little ones. Additionally, we have inspiring stories from cancer warriors and healthy eating advice from scientists and dietitians,” Liew said.

A kids’ karate demonstration also captivated the attendees.
