THE upcycling project, ‘Pokemon GO Island Air Itam Recycling Project’, at Air Itam constituency needs community participation to make it a success.
The project is a joint effort between Penang Youth Development (PYDC), Air Itam service centre, Penang SENTRAL College and Top Group Life Planning.
Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng said the project, which cost RM3,500, would take three months to be completed.
“Our target is to collect 5,000 mineral water bottles (500 ml) to create sculptures of the famous cartoon character, Pokemon.
“As of now, we have collected a total of 1,000 bottles and we want the community, especially the Air Itam residents, to help in collecting the bottles.
“The cost for the project is borne by the Top Group Life Planning.
“The sculptures will be installed in front of Chung Ling High School,” Ng said during a press conference today at the Penang2030 Air Itam service centre.
He added that the objective of the project is to raise public awareness of environmental issues, which is also in line with the Penang2030 vision.
Meanwhile, PYDC senior programme executive Samantha Tang thanked the SENTRAL College Penang for taking part in the project as well as providing students as volunteers.
“We chose to collaborate with the higher learning institution to empower, cultivate and educate the youth towards a holistic development.
“The public can send their bottles to these three different locations, Air Itam service centre, PYDC Youth Space and SENTRAL College Penang,” Tang said.
SENTRAL College deputy principal Tan Peng Hooi said students’ participation in the project would enable them to be more conscious of the environment and its sustainability.
