PUTTING aside their political differences, two opposing politicians – Lee Chun Kit (PH – Pulau Tikus) and Dr Afif Bahardin (PPBM – Seberang Jaya) – were on the same page when the topic of arts was raised at the State Legislative Assembly in Dewan Sri Pinang today.
Lee said he was drawn to a suggestion made by Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH – Seri Delima) yesterday, calling the state government to set up a Penang Arts Council.
“I am equally interested in arts, and strongly believe it needs the much-needed support from the Penang government to initiate and kickstart relevant programmes,” said Lee when debating the 2021 Budget today.
Lee also stated that he had previously been involved in a few stage dramas, singing competitions and other related musical performances, which clearly explained the reason behind his enthusiasm when discussing arts at the State Assembly.
While he was still on the go, Dr Afif intervened and surprised many by agreeing with Lee on the idea of further enhancing art-based activities in the state.
He particularly mentioned about glorifying the entertainment industry that was once graced by the late Tan Sri Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh, or better known by his stage name as P. Ramlee, by setting up a P. Ramlee Arts Award.
“This award can be used to recognise talents within the state, mainly for their contribution in arts-based activities.
“I truly agree with Lee and I hope that the Penang government will come up with a plan to spearhead this area (arts) and encourage many talents in the state that’s longing for an opportunity to present their skills,” said Dr Afif.
On a separate matter, Syerleena also requested the Penang government to consider allowing the Dewan Sri Pinang auditorium to be used as a venue to conduct art-based or musical performances on a more regular basis when the State Assembly Building in Light Street reopens.
Restoration works are currently ongoing and will be completed soon.
